Furniture Exhibition Salone del Mobile

From April 16 to 21, Milan hosted the renowned Salone del Mobile, the world’s largest furniture exhibition. This event holds immense significance for furniture manufacturers and designers worldwide, serving as a hub for innovative design ideas, the latest trends, and insights into the evolving furniture industry. This is where fashion trends in furniture and interior design are set for the years ahead. Additionally, it serves as an excellent venue for networking with industry representatives, both established partners and potential collaborators, fostering new business connections. The organizers themselves often refer to the exhibition as “a hub of experimentation and cross-pollination, a meeting point and a place for new opportunities”.

Naturally, ELIO HOME couldn’t pass up such a significant opportunity for growth. Therefore, our team, including the art director, general director, sales, and R&D representatives, attended the “Salone del Mobile” exhibition. It proved to be a highly enriching and engaging experience. The exhibition itself had returned to its pre-pandemic grandeur, impressing us with its scale and the creativity of the participants. Now, we’re excited to share our insights and discuss the primary trends in interior and furniture design, as well as intriguing ideas and innovative design approaches.

First and foremost, it’s worth noting that, according to the organizers, this year’s exhibition set a new record with 1,950 exhibitors from 35 different countries participating, and a staggering 370,824 visitors – a 20% increase from last year. Notably, this year, the International Kitchen Furniture Exhibition (EuroCucina FTK) was also held as part of the Salone del Mobile exhibition. Exhibits and art installations were showcased not only within the pavilions of the Rho Fiera Milano exhibition complex but also throughout the city streets. It’s important to highlight that a significant number of participants this year showcased a commitment to sustainable development and environmentally friendly practices.

Among the particularly captivating furniture trends showcased at the exhibition were:

  • The adoption of rounded, soft, and flowing shapes in the design of furniture for various rooms. Numerous designers showcased a departure from rigid, angular lines, instead favoring organic curves inspired by nature. This shift was evident in the design of armchairs, sofas, chairs, tables, shelves, and more. Such a trend not only enhances the visual appeal of the products but also contributes to cultivating a sense of comfort within interior spaces.
  • The incorporation of transparent materials like glass and acrylic into interior design, furniture, partitions, and accessories. Transparency is emerging as a crucial element in design, imbuing interiors with a sense of airiness and openness while also enhancing visual depth. This trend aligns with the modern aesthetics of open spaces and fosters a connection with the surrounding environment.
  • The increasing prevalence of innovative, smart technologies in the kitchen, along with its growing integration with other living spaces. This trend has prompted a reevaluation of kitchen furniture design, which becomes more multifunctional, seamlessly combining areas for cooking, storing utensils and various items, and dining. Simple shapes, natural materials, and colors dominate here.
  • Noticeable emphasis on using natural materials in furniture and decor. This trend aligns perfectly with the principles of sustainable development and eco-design. Many collections featured wood, stone, rattan, bamboo, and other sustainable materials known for their warmth, texture, and authenticity. Additionally, the widespread use of metal elements in furniture decoration stood out, lending a futuristic, original, and bold touch.
  • Wardrobes and stylish storage systems As in previous years, many manufacturers showcased wardrobes that blend functionality with aesthetics at the exhibition. In modern interiors, they serve not only as storage solutions but also as significant accents and room decorations. Reflecting current trends, wardrobe designs featured predominant elements such as transparent glass facades, aluminum frames, and natural wood finishes.
  • Striped relief. Striped textures were widely used in furniture decoration, adding volume, depth, and dynamics to the surfaces. This trend was embodied in various materials and color solutions.
  • The notable prevalence of natural colors, particularly earthy tones. Brown, olive, beige, terracotta, gray, and yellow hues dominated in many exhibitions. These colors evoke a sense of tranquility and emphasize harmony with the surrounding environment, contributing to overall well-being and mental health (an aspect, particularly relevant for Ukrainians in recent years).

Generally, the overarching theme of this year’s Salone del Mobile exhibition in Milan underscored the significance of the human element in every interior detail. Each piece of furniture was crafted with comfort and practicality at the forefront, aiming to create harmonious and functional living spaces. But at the same time, the interior composition remains distinctly stylish and modern, blending practicality with aesthetics to achieve an optimal balance.
